Not(es) From Here
Volume 1 - Malibu, CA
I'll be the first to admit, I’m generally pretty averse to typical tourist-like experiences. Discovering hidden gems that truly capture the essence of a place is far more satisfying to me than floating through the usual attractions. And while I may not be a local, I love to immerse myself and imagine what it would be like if I were. Who knows - maybe one day I will be. With that in mind, I'm excited to get into into the Not(es) From Here' newsletter, where we spotlight local-approved spots, shops, restaurants, etc. Our first stop: Malibu, CA.
Malibu is like a second home for our family and each time we go we fall deeper in love. We may even have an exciting project up our sleeves in the area and have the opportunity to spend more time out there.
So, after years of visiting and exploring the area, here’s my list of noteworthy spots that I’d love to take you to if we were there together.
Beaches
Broad Beach - Definitely where we frequent the most. Great surfing (according to my family, I don’t surf…), dog friendly, easy parking, and always a spot to throw a towel down and relax. Tip: Swing by Vintage Grocers ahead of time to grab drinks and snacks. The best!
Lechuza Beach - Hidden gem.
Point Dume - Period.
Where to Eat
We don’t really come to Malibu for the food, and recommend going into LA if you’re looking for the goods in that department, but these never miss the mark.
The Country Kitchen - Order the carnitas breakfast burrito and don’t sleep on the green salsa. Insane.
SunLife Organics - Have yet to order a smoothie I don’t like. Partial to the Wolverine and Million Dollar Smoothie, but that’s just me.
Broad Street Oyster Company - I am obsessed with this place. My husband loves lobster rolls, so that was the initial draw, but I keep going back for the catch of the day. Always spot on. Also, recently tried their cheeseburger and it was so good.
Nobu - Never disappoints. One of every cold dish please.
Lucky’s - Solid steakhouse, can always get in. We love it!
Also, Malibu Brewing Co, Zinqué, and Cholada
Where to Stay
Midcentury Modern Home - Some of the most gorgeous views of the coastline and the house is just so cool. Really convenient location for getting into LA as well.
Agave House - We absolutely love this property. It’s quite secluded and a little bit of an adventure to get to it, but totally worth it if you’re looking for a laid-back stay. Views are jaw dropping and can definitely thank this property for our infatuation with Western Malibu.
Surfrider - Love a coffee or cocktail on the rooftop to start and end the day.
Get Outside
For leisure, walk along Broad Beach or Point Dume for breathtaking views. There are also so many great hikes including: Sandstone Peak, Tuna Canyon and Topanga Lookout.
Shopping
It’s always nice to walk around Malibu Country Mart, especially during the week when it’s less crowded. I always love to bop into Surfing Cowboys, American Vintage, and James Perse.
Habitat and Malibu Market & Design for cool home finds.
There’s also a farmer’s market every Sunday from 9 AM - 2 PM, free summer concerts at Trancas County Market on Fridays from 6 PM - 9 PM, and regular concerts & events at Dreamland.
Hope this helps inspire your next trip to Malibu.
